Dead Warriors Society

[EN] It is an author project that emerged in 2009. That was a year of many trips around the country. The systematic collection of documentation and visits to medieval tombs where offensive and defensive weaponry is depicted, began to accumulate dozens of copies of these memorials and fill many notebooks. As research went on, we realized that there were no studies in the perspective of figurative weaponry or even of its relation to the various classes of warriors in medieval Portugal. In fact there are some epigraphic studies and others of art history. Others are published in monographs of patrimonial assemblages, without study, and their existence is only mentioned in a kind of accessory cartography. Some swords figuring in motions with tomb effigy have now begun to be published, though in a very generic way, usually based on earlier art history texts, adding a few lines about the weapon represented.  

 Our differentiated proposal aims at the detailed study and publication not only of the materials but also the framing of the characters and their weapons in the military context of the historical period in which they lived. [PT] É um projecto de autor surgido em 2009. Esse foi um ano de muitas viagens pelo país. A recolha sistemática de documentação e visitas a túmulos medievais onde figuram peças de armamento ofensivo e defensivo, começou a acumular dezenas de exemplares destes memoriais e a encher muitos livros de notas. Com o andar da investigação constatámos que não existiam estudos na perspectiva do armamento figurado ou mesmo da sua relação com as várias classes de guerreiros do Portugal medievo. 

Com efeito existem alguns estudos epigráficos e outros de história da arte O que leva a que se conheçam algumas biografias dos tumulados. Outros encontram-se publicados em monografias de conjuntos patrimoniais, sem estudo, sendo somente mencionada a sua existência numa espécie de cartografia acessória. 

Algumas espadas figuradas nos moimentos que têm efígie tumular começaram agora a ser publicadas, embora de uma forma muito genérica, usualmente baseadas em textos de história de arte anteriores, acrescentando umas linhas acerca da arma representada.

A nossa proposta diferenciada visa o estudo e publicação detalhados não só dos materiais mas também o enquadramento dos personagens e suas armas em contexto militar da época histórica em que foram vividos.
